1842 illustration of the ill fated 'Light of all nations', the beacon or lighthouse being erected on Goodwin Sands (England) at that time by civil engineer 'Mr Bush' . It's cast iron caisson was hit by a vessel (the Nancy) which was already in trouble in the night and later the caisson gradually sank into the sands, thus the project was abandoned. The proposed building was to be a 125 foot high Doric column supporting a 12 foot lantern and on top, a statue of Queen Victoria holding a scepter which was to act as a lightning conductor.
