A woman shows the arm where sharp-barbed spines of a jumping cholla cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida) have accidentally pierced her skin while she was hiking in the desert near Tucson, Arizona, USA. Although they do not actually "jump," the segments of the plant easily detach from the cactus stem and can be difficult and painful to remove from the skin.
