One of the most common appearances observed in uterus is the developement oi fibrous tuinot^s, (Fig. 82,) curring either in its substance, in its cav- ity, or on its outer surface beneath the se- rous covering. Their shape is usually spher- ical ; their diameter from the size of a hickorynut to that of a melon; their structure firm, dense, opaque, (Fig. 83,) and of a light grayish color, tearing into strong, concentric fi- bres. Such excres- cences have some- times a rough, gran- ulated texture, and not unfrequently they contain small cavi- ties, filled with earthy matter, or various kinds of fluids, such as serum, jelly, blood, or pus. The calcare- ous matter, which in some instances almost encases these morbid growths, in the form of a thin, brittle, shell, not unlike that of an egg, has been shown, by Dr. Bostock, to consist chiefly of the phosphate and carbo- nate of lime, together with a minute quan- tity of animal sub- or the oc-. Fie.
