Angry birds in SCOTLAND TWO FURIOUS birds were pictured having a heated squabble over their rights to a stump of wood at the bottom of a Scottish garden. The greenfinch and goldfinch birds were snapped on Monday, 27th November, fighting each other for 20 minutes in the woodland bird hide at Hawick, Scotland. Goldfinches are smaller greenfinches and are delicate in appearance with a noticeably pointed bill. The goldfinch population has spread northwards within Britain, and the species is now absent only from open mountains and moorland. Meanwhile, the Greenfinch is a regular garden visitor, able to take advantage of food in rural and urban gardens. These dramatic images were taken by a 69-year-old Scottish wildlife photographer, Ron McCombe, from a distance of 15 feet with an Olympus OM1 camera and a 100 - 400 mm zoom lens. ?I took the pictures in the woodland bird hide at the bottom of my garden on the woodland edge at Hawick, in the Scottish Borders,? he said. ?These are local birds to my hide area, and all the species behave differently. ?Most of the birds are very quick when they come in. Some are shy, while others are aggressive, and some can sometimes become very aggressive. ?I photograph the birds regularly as their plumages can change colours by the week. They are particularly nice at this time as we come into the winter ENDS
