Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), British educationalist and scholar, 1869. Arnold was the famous headmaster of Rugby School, who features in Thomas Hughes' Tom Brown's Schooldays. In this illustration from an 1869 edition of the novel, he is depicted speaking to one of the schoolboys.
