Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator, a descendant of the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family. Merian was one of the first European naturalists to observe insects directly. The illustration shows a page from the artist's first major work, "Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumennahrung" (Trans: The caterpillars' wonderful transformation and strange flower food)
