Scarlet fever. Close-up of a rash on the skin of a 15-year-old female patient with scarlet fever (scarlatina). Scarlet fever is caused by infection with Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. It causes a widespread red rash affecting the head, torso and limbs. The rash is caused by a toxin released by the bacteria.
