Surrender at Saratoga
On October 17, 1777, the American forces defeated the British at Saratoga in New York, the first major American victory in the Revolutionary War. In this image, British General Burgoyne surrenders to the Americans. The engraving is by the 18th-century French artisan Francois Godefroy, after an illustration by Fauvel .
