DNA sequencing determines the exact order of the four bases (adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine) that make up genes, sections of DNA that encode how every cell in the body works. Here, the bases have been colour-coded green, red, yellow and blue respectively. DNA sequencing makes it possible to find the exact cause of a genetic disease by comparing the order of bases in normal and faulty genes.
