An young elephant seal is fed by its mother on the beaches of Punta Ninfas.

Elephant Seal. It owes its common name not only to its enormous size, but to the presence in adult males of a proboscis hanging above the mouth, and can be inflated with a bag over his snout. This short trunk measuring about 30 cm, is used to fight or threaten other males during the breeding season. It has a strong sexual dimorphism, and that adult males can grow to over m in length and a weight of between 2,200 and 4,000 kg, although there have been examples of more than 6 meters and more than 6,000 kg . The female is much smaller, not exceeding m and 900 kg.
