Passiflora, known also as the passion flowers or passion vines, are mostly tendril-bearing vines which produce regular and usually showy flowers with a distinctive corona. The flower is pentamerous and ripens into an indehiscent fruit with numerous seeds. Most species have round or elongated edible fruit from two to eight inches long and an inch to two inches across, depending upon the species or cultivar. The fresh or dried leaves of some species are used to make a tea that is used for insomnia, hysteria, and epilepsy, and is also valued for its analgesic properties. Once dried, the leaves can also be smoked.
