Illustration of the US biochemist Paul Modrich (born 1946). Modich is best known for his work on DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) repair. He discovered the mechanism by which base-pair mismatches after DNA replication are detected and repaired, first in E. coli bacteria, then in human cells. He showed that defects in this mismatch repair system lead to a common form of inherited colorectal cancer. Modrich received a share of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Aziz Sancar and Tomas Lindahl, for their work on DNA repair mechanisms.
