Pausanias was a Spartan general, who led the Greeks in their victory over the Persians at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC. In 478 BC he was suspected of conspiring with the Persians having allegedly sent a letter King Xerxes I, saying he wished to bring Sparta and the rest of Greece under Persian control, in return for the hand of the king's daughter to which Xerxes agreed. Facing arrest, Pausanias escaped to the temple of Athena of the Brazen House. The Spartan leaders surrounded the temple and when Pausanias was on the brink of starving to death they carried him out, and he died in 470 BC.

Pausanias was a Spartan regent, general, and war leader who led the Greeks in their victory over Mardonius and the Persians at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC. In 478 BC he was suspected of conspiring with the Persians and was recalled to Sparta, however he was acquitted. He allegedly sent a letter Xerxes I, saying that he wished to help him bring Sparta and the rest of Greece under Persian control, in return for the hand of the king's daughter to which Xerxes agreed. Facing arrest, Pausanias escaped to the temple of Athena of the Brazen House. The ephors (Spartan Leaders) surrounded the temple, put sentries outside the entrances and proceeded to starve him out. When Pausanias was on the brink of death they carried him out, and he died soon afterwards in 470 BC.
