A portrait of Dame Nelly Melba, 'The Australian Nightingale' in later life. Her real name was Helen Porter Mitchell (1861 – 1931). She was an Australian operatic soprano who achieved worldwide fame. Her stage name "Melba" was adopted in honour of her home town,Melbourne. She was romantically linked to Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans in the early 1890's. During WWI, Melba raised large amounts for war charities. In her honour, her image was place on the Australian $100 note .
