A Saxon etched war hammer,circa 1570. Slightly curved,beak of quadrangular section,circular,slightly tapered hammerhead. Angular socket with a dovetailed belt hook on the side. Slender,tubular iron haft with a rectangular base. The grip with a strongly worn textile cover and studded with rivets,small rondel guard with a parrying hook on the side. Domed pommel plate. The haft and the head completely and finely etched with tendril decoration.
