The three judges and six 'lay judges' ( members of the public forming the jury) preside over courtroom proceedings during a mock trial where the defendant was accused of "accidental mortality" (and found innocent), in Saitama District Court, in Urawa town, Saitama city, Japan, Friday 27th February 2009. The mock trial is part of the process of introducing the 'lay judges jury system' to the Japanese law system. Trials with 'lay judge juries' will begin in May 2009.
