Engraving of Nicholo Paganini (1782-1840), Italian violinist, on his deathbed. Paganini started playing the violin from the age of seven, and was immediately recognised as a prodigious talent. In 1801, at the age of 18, he was appointed first violin of the Republic of Lucca. He became known across Europe during a concert tour in 1828. By 1834, he had retired from concert playing, his health declined and he died aged 57.
