Jack Crawford statue in Mowbray Park Sunderland, this local man was honoured for his bravery during the Battle of Camperdown in 1797 when he climbed the mast of his ship, the HMS Venerable,to nail the British flag to the main-top-gallant despite considerable risk. He died of cholera in 1831 at the age of 56.
