Examination of John Francis by the Privy Council after his attempt on the life of Queen Victoria,Riding down the Mall, Prince Albert reported seeing “a little, swarthy, ill-looking rascal” point a pistol at them and pulling the trigger which failed to fire. Albert himself reported it to the police. The next day plain clothes officers were in the crowd when a shot rang out as the convoy travelled through the parks. John Francis an unemployed carpenter was sentenced to be hanged and beheaded – Queen Victoria personally commuted his sentence to transportation to Australia.
