Kelly Miller (1863-1939), US mathematician and sociologist. Miller studied at Howard University, Washington DC, one of the institutions pioneering education of African-Americans in general, and former slaves and their children in particular. Miller went on to study at Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, the first African-American to do so. He became professor of mathematics at Howard University in 1890, but he also developed his interest in sociology, becoming professor in that subject from 1895-1934. He was also a prolific writer, with a weekly newspaper column. He also wrote on his views on African-American education policies. Photographed published circa 1917.
