Battle-scarred male Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) enters water with bleeding wounds at Sunset Dam Kruger National Park


Male hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), a large and heavy African herbivore can grow to over 3 metres long and can weigh over 3 tonnes. It has sharp canines that are used to attack mating rivals and defend itself. It feeds on vegetation in rivers and lakes in sub-Saharan Africa, emerging at night to feed on grasses. It communicates with a variety of grunts and rumbling noises.
