Orchid flowers (Cochlioda vulcanica). The trumpet- shaped petals (one on each flower, tinged white) are specialised petals called lips. They attract pollinators and provide them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). It is also found growing on rocks and cliffs, when it is called a lithophyte. It is found in tropical South America. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
