An old press photograph of farmers ploughing with oxen in the Cotswolds circa 1930's. Oxen were traditionally used rather than horses in Britain prior to WWI as they were stronger and had much more resilience to becoming tired, except in very hot conditions when horses cope better . They were commonly castrated adult male cattle to make them easier to control. Though sometomes shoed, the practice was not common in Britain. This involved fitting two half-moon shaped iron "cues" (shoes) on each foot.
