Ophir jail and lock up, built in 1900. It has two cells and was originally located next to the police house. It was used as a holding cell, perhaps overnight for minor transgressions - drunk and disorderly for example. For more serious matters criminals or suspects were kept there prior to transfer to a larger facility and was moved to its present site in 2002 after having been moved to Omakau where it was no longer needed. It speny its last few years there as a sleep out. It was rescued by The Ophir Welfare Committee who raised the funds to move it "home" and pay for its restoration. It is a populat visitor's attraction where you can view the cramped conditiond inside the lock up. If you visit on a hot summers day you will appreciate what an unpleasant place it would have been to be locked up in.
