Such ovarian fragments, provided that they were taken from very ripe females, shed spontaneously (even in the absence of added shedding substance) within 15 to 30 minutes after immersion in sea water. However, when these fragments were immersed in each of the above fractions taken from Sephadex columns, all fractions allowed shedding to occur except that fraction (#5) previously found to contain shedhibin.
