A fire urchin (Astropyga radiata), the stings from which are very painful and can sometimes prove fatal. Photographed in Balinese waters, Indonesia.

The striking appearance of the fire urchin (Astropyga radiata), of which this image is a dorsal view, represents a warning. Stings from its sharp toxic spines are extremely painful and occasionally can be fatal to humans. Feeding mainly on algae and seaweeds, it moves around on hundreds of tiny tube feet, sometimes using its movable spines as stilts.
