Coppiced hazel regrowth after about 3 years. 20 year old stool, coppiced many times. Edge of Orchard, garden, used to supply home grown plant supports, bean poles and some firewood, cut in fairly short cycle - no more than 5 years when sticks are right diameter, and before they encroach on nearby apple trees. This is shorter cycle than would be normal for commercial Hazel coppice 7-10 years. Cut them too frequently and you diminish the vigour of the plant/tree, take out suitable poles when they are the right size, remove odd shaped, thin growth. Cut with pruning saw or bow saw about 2 inches from stool. Stub will regrow from buds on cut stem or from side of stool. How close you cut to ground level is up to you but preferabley not level with ground as this allows stool to become rotten, struggle against undergrowth, submerged by vegetation. If rabbits eat new growth, protect cut stool with light layer of brash/twigs.
