An adult male American buffalo sheds his heavy winter coat of woolly hair as the weather warms up in spring. Also known as American bison, these huge distinctive mammals of the West and Canada often rub against large trees or rocks to help remove the hair from their bodies. Only long hair on the head, hump and forelegs remains year-round. An American bison appeared on the 5-cent (nickel) coin from 1913 through 1938; the head of an American Indian was featured on the coin's other side.
