Colony collapse disorder: Top, Healthy hive; Bottom, CCD.

Colony collapse disorder is a honeybee disease of uncertain cause or origin. Foraging worker bees in affected hives fail to return to the hive, leaving behind only younger bees to tend the brood. Colonies eventually starve or freeze to death. A virus called probably plays some role in the disorder but is not likely the sole cause.
