A riverside showing the adult Drone Fly (Eristalis Tenax) and its larva the Red-tailed Maggot. A hoverfly of the order Diptera, it's one of the three largest and most diverse animal groups in the world known from all regions except the Antarctic. It can be found in gardens and fields all over both Europe and Australia. The larval form of the drone-fly, the rat-tailed maggot, is aquatic, and has a cylindrical shape with patches of horizontal folds that divides the body into segments.
