The early 1900s caption reads: "BOHEMIAN INSURRECTION OF 1790.—The Bohemian peasants, or rather serfs, mere slaves of the nobles and terribly downtrodden, heard of the great French Revolution, learned that men were supposed to be equal, and so rose against their oppressors. Naturally their excesses were proportioned to the dense ignorance in which they had been kept, and terrible was the fate of the unfortunate nobles who fell into their hands. The insurgents were scarce human in their ferocity. Regular troops, however, found little difficulty in suppressing them."
