A species once thought to be extinct, a Dawn Redwood .. Metasequoia glyptostroboides stands majestically in High Park in Toronto

Named Metasequoia (meaning "like a sequoia") from fossil records in 1941 and subsequently declared and extinct species, the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) was re-discovered in a remote forest in China 1944. After the war an expedition was dispatched from Harvards Arnold Arboretum to collected seeds. It's re-introduction was successful and they are now a common sight in parks and large gardens around the world.
