Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil of a Diplomystus dentatus fish. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen, which dates from the Eocene epoch (between 55 and 33 million years ago), measures 16 centimetres in length and was found in the USA.
