Blackthorn bush with berries

The photograph shows the ripe berries of a Blackthorn tree (prunus Spinoza) otherwise known as Sloes. Sloes are common in the British countryside, and are commonly used to make flavoured spirit drinks, particularly ‘Sloe Gin’. Traditionally made to be drunk at Christmas, the sloes give the gin a deep purple hue.
