Rhine octopus, the rubbish trap on the Rhine: An estimated one tonne of rubbish flows down the Rhine towards the North Sea every day. The association KRAKE (Kölner Rhein-Aufräum-Kommando-Einheit) has declared war on this flood of rubbish. Not only on land, but also on water. Since September 2022, the Rhine Octopus has been floating in the Rhine near the Zoo Bridge. The aim is not only to intercept rubbish before it ends up in the Wadden Sea nature reserve, but also to collect important data on the nature of the flood of rubbish
