Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Brown soft scale insect; crawler (2nd instar) stage (Coccus hesperidum). Scale insects are atypical insects found in many plant environments. Small, usually immobile, with no visible legs or antennae, they resemble individual fish scales pressed tightly against the plant on which they are feeding. Many are common and serious pests of trees, shrubs, and indoor plants. Brown soft scale is a serious plant pest and has been reported feeding on hundreds of different plants. Large colonies remove large quantities of plant fluids and can cause wilting, but they seldom kill their host. Immature and adults forms produce much honey dew that serves as a medium for the growth of sooty moulds. Magnification: x110 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
