Light micrograph of a section through the human colon, showing two tubular adenomas (polyposis coli), types of colonic polyps. The polyps appear as the densely stained, berry-like features in centre of image. The polyp at left is much larger than its neighbour. Colonic polyps are usually benign adenomas (tumours) of the colonic mucosal epithelium. In the tubular form, the adenoma proper is connected to the lining of the colon by a short, narrow stalk. In one inheritable condition known as familial polyposis coli, numerous tubular adenomas are distributed throughout the colon, that may undergo transformations into malignant cancers.
