HERBS AND HERBALS Titlepage of Nicolas Monardes, Joyfull Newes out of the New-Found World, 1596 (translated into English by John Frampton). The book mentions the discovery by Columbus, and gives an account of tobacco, and various new herbs (genuine or fictitious) associated with the newly explored America. This treament includes the gum-tree called Tacamachaca, and the oil of the 'Figge-Tree of Hell', and of the curious tree from which one may learn wether one shall live or die. Its observations are not restricted merely to the superstitions of the New World.
