Bacterial DNA transfer, conceptual computer illustration. Bacterial cells containing molecules of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, represented by letters). The white molecule is the bacterial chromosome, the blue molecule is a plasmid. Plasmids, which often carry genes for beneficial traits such as antibiotic resistance, can be exchanged between bacteria in a process known as conjugation. This image also illustrates the transfer of artificial genetic material into a bacterium. A foreign strand of DNA (blue) enters the cell, and the cell's colour changes to match that of the new DNA, indicating that genes in the new DNA are being expressed. Specific genes can be artificially introduced to bacteria to confer desired properties, such as the ability to produce the hormone insulin.
