Wartime railway switchtender. Switchtender during the Second World War working on the Pennsylvania Railroad in the USA, helping to classify freight trains at a large eastern freight yard. The electric controls on the board actuate rail switches in the yard. During the war, many roles such as this saw women replace men who had been called up to serve in the armed forces. Photographed by Alfred T. Palmer in around 1943.
