An early portrait of film actress Mary Pickford. Born Gladys Louise Smith (April 8, 1892 – May 29, 1979) she was known as 'America's Sweetheart' , Queen of the Movies and the "girl with the curls" during her long Canadian-American film career. She was both actress and producer during her 50 year career. As a pioneer in the American film industry, she co-founded Pickford–Fairbanks Studios and United Artists, and was one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. She was awarded two Academy Awards for Best Actress. After retiring, she became an alcoholic and died in 1979
