Wine quality inspection. Winemaker examining a glass of wine to assess its quality. He is observing clear liquid rivulets running down the side of the glass, a phenomenon called 'tears of wine'. This occurs due to a combination of capillary action where the wine meets the glass, and differential vapour pressure and surface tension gradients between the alcohol and the water in the wine. Examining the extent of the 'tears' enables an assessment to be made of the wine's alcohol content. Photographed in Italy.
