People passing through the Gate of Flourishing Blessings (architectural detail), Forbidden City, Beijing, China. Built from 1406 to 1420 and containing more than 8,000 structures, the Forbidden City served as the residence and seat of government for the monarchs of both the Ming and Qing dynasties until 1911. Finally opened to visitors in 1925 as a public museum, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
