A 1933 portrait of Sir Patrick Hastings who was of Irish ancestry and served as attorney general in the Patrick Gardiner Hastings, QC ( 1880 – 1952) was a noted British barrister and politician (Labour Member of Parliament for Wallsend in Northumberland). He came to notice of the public when he took party in the trial of the Case of the Hooded Man in 1912. Though an amateur playwright, his play called The River was made into a silent film in 1927 as The Notorious Lady with mixed reviews. He served as a volunteer in the 2nd Boer War, joining the Suffolk Imperial Yeomanry where
