Recreation NASA astronaut Ed White on first US space walk during Gemini 4 mission

The first astronaut to do a space walk or EVA (extravehicular activity) was the Soviet Alexey Leonov in March 1965. Internal pressure made his suit inflate so much that he couldn’t re-enter the space hatch as planned. He had to vent air from his suit - and risk the bends - in order to re-enter. The first American to do an EVA was Edward H. White in June 1965 - as represented in my image here. White was killed by a fire inside the 100% oxygen-filled module of the first Apollo mission during a launch practice at Cape Kennedy in 1967.
