Rudolph Steiner. Portrait of Rudolph Steiner (1861-1925), Austrian educationalist and philo- sopher, who founded a spiritual movement he named anthroposophy. Steiner's philosophy was centred on the human being rather than God. He believed that the spiritual world was accessible to a properly- developed intellect. He believed that materialism could be overcome through meditation and concentration. In 1913 he established the Goetheanum, a Swiss school for maladjusted child- ren in which the education was based on art, drama and play as creative activities. His teachings formed the basis of the Waldorf School movement, which is still used in Europe and the USA.
