Thomas Wolsey (1473-1530), English political figure and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. When Henry VIII became king of England in 1509, Wolsey became the King's almoner. He fell from power over his failure to secure papal approval for Henry to divorce Catherine of Aragon and removed from office. He was arrested in Leicester on false charges of treason and died on his way to London.
