Unkempt and untidy veg plot in winter frost. Glass cloches covering last crops of the year; perpetual spinach and some parsley. North Wales, UK

Untended and untidy veg plot in January frost. Recycled sash window panels being used as tent cloches and vintage barn cloches are being used to provide frost and rain protection for overwintering perpetual spinach, parsley, and kale. The unkempt vegetable plot has been left uncultivated since autumn while the ground is too wet to work. The weeds and grass have grown strongly due to the mild winter, and will now prove hard work to dig in or clear. Remains of summer herbs, beans and courgettes have been left to rot in situ. Old hazel bean poles and sticks have been collected and stacked prior to chipping. The simple rabbit fencing has rotted and needs re-staking. In the foreground are the stiff stems of a row of Rudbeckia flowers. The vintage, low barn cloche on the right is protecting parsley from winter frost, as well as rain and wind. The top vent is open to minimise condensation. The ends sealed with panes of glass held in place by sticks tied to metal frame with recycled strips from clothes. The wire frames have been handed down through three generations of one family so should date from circa 1940. The weight of the glass and securely fastened ends makes both the window panes and glass barn cloches very stable in strong winds.
