Ronnie Scott, One of Britains foremost jazz tenor sax players born 28th Jan 1927 died 23rd Dec 1996. Was also famed as The founder (with Pete King his partner) of the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club In Frith Street, opened in Oct 1959 in a basement in Gerrard St, it moved to Frith St in 1965,the lease ran out in 1967 when they moved to their present address. Ronnie was a legend and was often compere to the many jazz musicians from around the world who played there. In doing so he realised a form of dry wit that proved most popular. He began touring when he was just seventeen with Johnny Class Band, he later played with the Ted Heath Band, Ambrose, Cab Kaye,Tito Burns, Johnny Dankworth and many others. He played on the Queen Mary as a method of getting to New York to hear the top musicians there. In 1962 he joined Jack Parnnel's orchestra and then formed a nine piece and quintet band of his was the time he met Pete King, later to be his partner at the club and for nine years after his death. He co-led The Jazz Couriers, with Tubby Hayes. From 1967 - 1969 he joined The Kenny Clarke - Francy Boland Big Band, an attempt to return to the big band era. Ronnie Scott was greatly influenced by thte playing of Charlie Parker, he was admired by other black jazz musicians including Charlie Mingus who said of him "Of the white boys Ronnie gets closer to the negro blues feeling the way Zoot Sims does". He died aged 69 by an over dose of pills, the verdict was "death by misadventure".
