Italy: Medieval icon of Saint John the Baptist (c. 1st century BCE - 30 CE). Right Pinnacle Panel from an altarpiece by Giovanni da Milano (fl. 1346-1369), c. 1365. John the Baptist was a Judean preacher from the Jordan River area. Also known as John the Forerunner, John the Immerser and Prophet Yahya, he is revered as a major religious figure in Christianity, Islam, Druze and Mandaeism. Considered a prophet of God, he was seen as a precursor to Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke says that Jesus and John were related.
